August 2019 Newsletter
Back to School Event
August is National Back to School Month. Chinatown clients with 5-18 year-old children were invited to our August 9 Back to School event. A health workshop presented by a pediatrician preceded the giveaway. Dr. Jennifer Hsu with Asian American Medical Group (AAMG) talked to our clients about baby skincare and other baby-related health topics and the importance of well-child visits.
We distributed 200 backpacks and school supplies from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. A playroom was set up in another room with child watch. Snacks and refreshments were available for all to enjoy. Representatives from North East Medical Services (NEMS) were present to outreach and provide information for these families regarding Census 2020. Program staff survey participants’ knowledge of health information and nutritional needs. Community resources and program services information were disseminated.
Sponsors included APA Family Support Services, Asian Pacific Islander Family Resources Network, Bay Area Clean Water Agencies (BACWA), First 5 San Francisco, San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, San Francisco Office of Civic Engagement & Immigrant Affairs (OCEIA), Sutter Health CPMC, and Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA).
We also distributed backpacks and school supplies to our clients with school-aged children at our family resource center in Excelsior, Vis Valley Raymond Ave. center and in the Tenderloin through their case managers. Please see below for a photo of clients at the Excelsior Back to School backpack giveaway.
