Onward To A New Life
A young mother contacted our APA Family Stressline because she was experiencing postpartum depression. She had no desire to leave the house. Staff invited her to attend our support group and Discovery Land to meet other new moms. She confided to our staff that she was experiencing low self-esteem and was a victim of verbal and physical abuse by her husband. We provided her with ongoing support and counseling. She realized it was necessary to get out of this damaging relationship for the safety of herself and her baby. Our case manager identified the legal resources to assist her with the paperwork and the challenging step-by-step process of filing for a divorce.
We also provided her with a Chinatown YMCA membership. She used exercise along with the programs offered to alleviate her emotional stress and to cope with her separation/divorce. Participation in our support group helped her to rebuild confidence and learn about self-worth and self-care so she can be a healthy mom for her young child. Eventually she was able to return to work. The YMCA facility (yoga, swimming, and gym equipment) is still the place for her to relieve stress.
