ACT Parenting Class
On October 8, five parents/grandparents from APA's Excelsior family support center celebrated their graduation form our ACT Parenting Class. This class is held twice a year at one or two of our locations. The parenting class is comprised of nine 2-hour sessions.

The ACT Raising Safe Kids Program was developed by the American Psychological Association's Violence Prevention Office with assistance from experts. It teaches positive parenting skills to parents and caregivers of children from birth to age 10. Curriculum and materials are research-based and strength-based, and culturally sensitive.

Our staff has been trained to deliver the program curriculum. Topics are as follows:
Pre-Meeting: Motivation and Behavioral Changes
Session 1: Learning Child Development and Understanding Children’s Behavior
Session 2: Young Children’s Exposure to Violence
Session 3: Understanding and Controlling Parents/Adults’ Anger
Session 4: Understanding and Helping Angry Children
Session 5: Children and Electronic Media
Session 6: Discipline and Parenting Style
Session 7: Discipline for Positive Behaviors
Session 8: Parents as Teachers, Protectors and Advocates at Home and in the Community
