November / December 2018 Newsletter

Breaking the Silence
October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month. On October 24, 26 and 27 one hundred plus visitors signed in at our domestic violence awareness exhibition See DV "Inside Out". Domestic violence often occurs alongside child abuse. "Days Through Tomorrow," a video that we have produced as a Child Abuse Education and Advocacy Project, was screened at this multi-media exhibit. We plan to share the final cut of this video with the community in the future.

APA will receive $65,000 as part of a three-year $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to focus on on improving the criminal justice response to underserved and Limited English Proficient (LEP) victims living in Bayview and at high risk for lethality in relationships. Partners for this $750,000 grant are San Francisco Department on the Status of Women (DOSW), the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office (DA), the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), and La Casa de las Madres (La Casa).

Emily Murase, director of the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, announced the grant at Bayview District Police Station on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018. Pictured below is Amor Santiago, APA's Executive Director,  speaking at the news conference.

Here is a LINK to KTSF Channel 26's report on the news conference  (mainly in Cantonese). Please scroll to 1:19 on the video progress bar for the portion about APA, starting with Amor talking about API (Asian Pacific Islander) barriers and stressors. The report then mentions the various services that APA will provide.
