Application Process and Eligibility

  • You can complete a CalFresh application in person at your local county office or online. You may also call us for assistance with your application at (415) 260-9003.

  • No. Applying for CalFresh is free and does not require a credit check.

  • In most cases, the county has 30 days after you turn in your application to determine if you will get CalFresh. During the 30 days, the county will interview you. The interview will be either over the phone or in person.

  • Here are some examples of items the county may ask you for:

    • Proof of identity (examples: birth certificate, driver’s license or ID card, U.S. passport, school records, voter registration card)

    • Social security numbers for everyone who is applying

    • Proof of where you live (examples: driver’s license or ID card, utility bill, rent receipt)

    • Proof of income (examples: pay stubs, statement from employer, copy of last year’s tax return, alimony checks)

    • Proof of shelter costs (examples: housing bills, utility bills, HOA fees, property tax statement)

    • Child support court order

    • Child or adult care costs

    • Proof of disability

    • Proof of medical costs if 60+ or disabled

    Even if you do not have everything on the list, you should still apply. The county may be able to help you obtain the necessary information.

    • You can own a car and still qualify for CalFresh.

    • You can have a job and still qualify for CalFresh.

    • You can own the home you live in and still qualify for CalFresh.

    • You can qualify for CalFresh even if you do not have a home, address, or place to cook.

    • Individuals without family or children may qualify for CalFresh.

    • You may qualify for CalFresh even if you are in the military.
