CalFresh Basics
CalFresh is the nation’s biggest and best anti-hunger program. This government run program helps households buy healthy foods.
Households can apply to receive up to $292 a month per household member on an EBT card. An EBT card works like a debit card that can be used at most grocery stores and many farmers markets to purchase food.
Applying for CalFresh is free. In most cases, the county has 30 days after you turn in your application to determine if you will get CalFresh. During the 30 days, the county will interview you to see if you are eligible to enroll in the program. You can contact your county CalFresh office by calling 1-877-847-3663.
You maybe eligible even if you:
Own a car
Own a home
Have a job
Do not have permanent home or are unhoused (people without homes can often get benefits within three days)
Are an individual or have a family
Are a veteran
Are a student – learn about the special rules for students
Are an immigrant – read the guide for immigrants
